We are working with a local expat to help improve the sport and recreation ground at the Klong Muang Primary School by installing drainage in the playground area.

Klong Muang is small village of 2,500 people on the Andaman Sea in Krabi Province in the south-west of Thailand. Historically it was a fishing village. In recent years, with the growth of tourism in Thailand and its picturesque location, 4 and 5-star resorts have been attracted to Klong Muang and now line its beaches. The village itself remains largely untouched by tourism except that tourism is, in normal times, a large employer in the village.  Despite its 4 and 5-star resorts Klong Muang remains a poor village with few services.

Klong Muang Primary School is the only school in Klong Muang and has the only public playing field in the village. Besides the school using it for the usual school activities such as assemblies, award ceremonies and as a playground, the villagers use it for volleyball, football (soccer), festivals, etc.

Thailand is monsoonal. It arrives at the beginning of April and departs at the end of November. During the wet season, by September, October, November it is coming down almost every day. During the rainy season (from April to November) the only public / school sports ground in the Klong Muang area is not usable. The soil is clay; the ground absorbs the rainwater and holds it. The playground soon becomes saturated, a series of muddy puddles.

Unfortunately, at this stage we were not able to develop a viable solution for the resurfacing of the playground. Alternately we installed three toilets near the kindergarten rooms to overcome teachers having to walk a distance to take children to the toilet, covering a walkway for the older children to access toilets and school grounds and playground equipment. The Rotary Club of Dapto was supported financially by the Rotary Clubs of Coffs Harbour and Camden. Great team work! The power of Rotary! Photos of the toilets in the slideshow.
