The Imagination Library was started by Dolly Parton in 1995. The Northern Illawarra Rotary Clubs have implemented the program over the past years with great success. A committee including Sue Clark from Corrimal is the chair, David Guillaume from Fairy Meadow is the treasurer, the registrar is Tom O’Toole from West Wollongong. Representatives from Dapto, Kiama, Wollongong, Shellharbour City and Illawarra Sunrise are also on the committee.

How it works?
  • A child receives a book each month for a year . In most cases, if the funding is available this is ongoing until they reach school age. It has been shown through this project that having access to books can make a significant difference to the child’s ability to learn when they reach school age.
  • Disadvantaged children are identified by the local early childhood centres. The child’s details are the entered into a database and each month a book, that has been identified as appropriate by the program, is posted to the child.
